we have five BIG projects in the water for 2012!

1)  adopt a turtle.  in conjunction with our superbly shelled amigos at the leatherback trust, we plan to adopt an endangered leatherback turtle, and place a satellite transponder on her, to learn more about her migrations, her nesting cycles, and make certain that she remains free from harm!  she will become our mascot, and we will be able to track her movements, and engage the community, as she joins the great turtle race from her nesting beach in costa rica to the galapagos islands!  go kurma, go!  we need to raise $3000 to pull this off.
become part of team turtle today.

2)  dive in!  we aim to aid and participate in a 12 day turtle-tagging and shark-wrangling mission to cocos island with our biologizing brethren at the sea turtle restoration project.  on this mission, we will add to the project's current tagging efforts in cocos, that include 150 sharks with acoustic telemetry, and 71 green + 2 hawksbill turtles, with a combination of satellite, acoustic, and monel tags.  we will also recover, download data, and re-deploy six acoustic receivers located underwater around the island.  the ante for our share of this mission is $7000.
join the turtletribe and help us make this happen!

3)  navasananavy  -activate bioboat!  we plan to purchase and convert a twin diesel 30' power catamaran (and a one ton turtletruck) to run on biodiesel.  this boat will serve as an example that we can, and must, make amazing things happen while beheading our addiction to big oil.  off fossil!

this activist bioboat will be launched in the local waters of southern california to implement our projects in the santa monica bay, and the channel islands.  it will also be trailerable, and ready to extend a hand in time of need.  we can deploy up and down the coast, or across the country, such as in the great gulf oil spill of 2010.  this is our big ticket item.  we need to raise around $60,000 to make this a reality.  shoo wee!  good news is we are already about halfway there!
join the navasananavy, and activate the bioboat!

4)  pluckfastic  is a movement originated with our brotherfromanothermother, dr. wallace j. nichols, to address the issues surrounding plastic pollution, and it's effects upon the ocean.

this disposable catastrophe has a particularly dire impact upon sea turtles just last year a sea turtle was rescued, and was observed having a gut-wrenchingly  hard time digesting food.  a piece of plastic was removed from its gastro-intestinal tract, and over the course of the next month the turtle proceeded to poop 74 pieces of plastic!

a whale recently washed up on the shore of california, and in the necropsy, it was found that over 400 lbs. of plastic was lying undigested in the whales intestines!  we continue to elevate consciousness to the fact that single use plastic is in no way sustainable, and in fact ludicrous.  why in the world would we create something that lasts forever, to use for five minutes?

lets be clear... recyclable does not mean recycled.

the so-cal chapter of pluckfastic intends to launch the bioboat into the waters of santa monica bay.  we will document, and collect, the massive amount of plastic pollution choking the ecosystem in our own backyard.  we aim to become plastic-alchemists, turning this trash into treasure, while recycling the refuse into usable materials; the building blocks to be used in such radical products as yoga mats, ecoblocks, skidless towels, and conscious clothing.  we will sell these products to activate the missions.  once we have the bioboat under our feet, we will need to raise funds to biofuel the mission: to house and maintain the boat, to transport the raw waste material to recycling facilities right here in santa monica, and then to generate new product from recycled material.  until the glorious day the boat manifests, we will continue to stand-up for the oceans.  we paddle out on our standup paddleboards filling backpacks with floating plastic debris, and try to reclaim our ocean.  we aim to continue raising funds in an ongoing campaign.

5)  fishin' for consciousness
the unfortunate truth is that the way we fish the oceans is destructive and neandrathal.  it is akin to hunting with a nuclear warhead.  in fact, we often do fish with dynamite, destroying entire reef systems and picking up the floaters.  when it comes to the oceans, and fishing practices, we have a very much out of sight/out of mind philosophy.  we think of it as an endless bounty.  it is time to awaken to the fact that if we want the oceans (and therefore the planet, and therefore our civilization) to survive, we need to open our eyes, and look beneath the surface.

the trawl-net and longlining practices of the commercial fisheries must be examined, and evolve toward sustainability.  humans are the greatest predators in the sea.  sea turtles, in particular have taken a massive suckerpunch.  many of our biologists estimate that some turtle populations have declined by as much as 95% over the course of the last several decades!  and all are severely endangered.

as of january 1, 2012, the state of california has implemented several new MPA's, or Marine Protection Areas, off the coast, and in the channel islands.  this is fantastic news, but as in the case of recyclable vs. recycled, protected does not mean enforced.  unfortunately, the gov. does not have the resources, nor funding, nor real interest, to make sure that their laws are being enforced.  aboard the bioboat, we will patrol these MPA's with our eyes peeled.  we will be an honest witness in the ocean.  we will be there to ensure that the regulations set forth are being upheld, and will create a ruckus if they are not.  once the navasananavy raises the boat, we need to generate funding to cover operating expenses of off-shore missions.  we anticipate that these missions will burn about $20,000 over the course of the next year, but provide the priceless benefit of protecting countless marine species for generations to come.

with our aggressive campaigns, we are looking to raise $100,000 all told.  obviously, this is no small undertaking.  but with your help, we can activate.  join the kurmalliance, and become a member of the turtle tribe!  we save, we seva.
